Romania kicks off Euro 2024 campaign with a 3-0 win over Ukraine

A belter from Nicolae Stanciu moments after a dreadful miss set Romania on their way to a 3-0 win over ten-man Ukraine in their Euro 2024 Group C opener.

Denys Popov's red card in the 34th minute for a foul on Dennis Man left Ukraine with a mountain to climb in Bucharest.

Vlad Chiriches steered home a header before half-time and substitute Florinel Coman slid in a third late on to cap a superb display from the home side.

Romania, who finished bottom of their group at Euro 2020, will now face Austria in Vienna on Sunday while Ukraine host North Macedonia.

Andriy Shevchenko's Ukraine side were dealt a blow before kick-off when Oleksandr Zinchenko was ruled out with a calf injury.

In the end, however, Ukraine's task was made all the more difficult by Popov's sending off, which came after he had bundled over Man as the Romania forward raced into the area.
